Contemporary British Landscape Painters on ArtAngel.com.au

British Contemporary landscape artists featured on Art Angel include Howard Coles, and Jim Whitty, both generating excitement in the British Art scene as their work becomes widely know and increasingly critically appraised.

Many of the Artists featured on Art Angel have landscape painting as a major or central part of their work, although would probably not want to be labeled as "landscape artists"; it is, at least, contemporary landscape painting, and rather uses landscape as a medium for expressing change. The landscape that their work evokes is diverse ranging from the Highlands of Scotland to the mountains and coastline of Wales in the UK, to New South Wales in Australia.

The media used is also diverse: From pastel landscape to mixed media and oil landscape painting. The style of the artists is also diverse:

For anyone who has visited the coastal region of North Wales, Howard Coles' Landscape Painting will immediately evoke the nature of that land, the shifting light, the mutable landscape. His work is not literal, but suggests forms and describes the interplay of light and landscape. His main media are oil and mixed media.

Jim Whitty's work, similarly could be described as oil landscape painting, but takes a more descriptive, sometimes photographic approach to depiction of "landscape" - although in recent work any land featured is sub-aqua! The photographic nature of his work is shown most clearly in the depiction of time; whereas Howard Coles suggests change with the abstraction of form and movement, Jim's work uses the photographic paradigm - showing degrees of blurring as movement varies.

Solveig Larsen, whilst having a more traditional approach to landscape painting, still abstracts and emphasises the colour of the Landscape of New South Wales.

Both Howard Coles and Jim Whitty, whist at either end of a generational spectrum (!) are set to make an impact on the British Art scene as they are increasingly realised as major British Contemporary artists.
