Art Angel is focused on contemporary art: we believe that some
of the most interesting work is recent - especially recent. All
work
featured on Art Angel has been produced in the last few years.
You will find here a coherent aesthetic, as you would expect in
a
good
"real" gallery. The artists featured on this site are
all full-time professional artists - they make all or a large
part of
their living through sales of paintings and prints. For someone
working in contemporary art, this means a constant effort to promote
and disseminate their work.
To the art-investor this means the work can only accrue value.
To the art-lover it means, perhaps unfortunately, that the works
increase in cost! HOWEVER...
We do not believe in "confidant pricing". You will find
no artist here that has never had a major exclusive show looking
for £2000 for a piece. If you believe a work is priced highly,
it is because the artist regularly sells at that price, in galleries
in London, Cardiff, Edinburgh...
"Modern Art"
We prefer to use the term "Contemporary Art" or "original
artworks" over "modern
art": to some people modern art seems linked to especially
experimental or confrontational work with no inherent aesthetic
goals. It seems linked to "ugly 70's buildings" and impenetrable
performance work. It goes hand in hand with comments like "looks
like he just cleaned 'is brushes on it" and "I could
do that" (heard at a Mark Rothko exhibition in Liverpool,
UK). Art Angel "modern art" is generally aesthetically
motivated. It does not necessarily convey an idea, or give an
insight into
the soul of the artist, it usually doesn't "mean" anything.
It DOES usually capture a mood or movement, an feeling
or atmosphere.
